Introducing...Modern Romance

Remember the 80s band Modern Romance? This is your chance to have them play their hits and plenty more at your event! We chat with lead singer Andy about getting romanced...

What has been the highlight of your Modern Romance career so far?

Andy -modernrm

Well, there are many memorable moments, so I suppose the best I can do is to pick one. I would say one of the things that sticks in my mind, is when it dawned on me that we were in the process of achieving real fame.

That came the day after our very first Top Of The Pops appearance, as I walked down the High Road in Wood Green, where I lived at the time. I was recognised by about 10 girls as they were walking together. They started pointing and getting excitable, and I just wished I'd taken a different route. This was one of the few times I have been embarrassed!

Can you tell us a secret about a star from the 80s?

No I can't - it wouldn't be a secret then! But I can tell you one of my secrets about an 80's star - I used to fancy Kim Wilde! I met her once at the Royal Variety Show and could only stand and admire....

What are you up to now?

Right now I am answering these questions........................oh, I see, you mean musically, or generally. Well, I am preparing for our summer shows, auditioning a new keyboard player, as well as writing articles as a journalist. I have several press trips planned for this year - the first is to Belgium. I am also in the process of transcribing the diaries I kept in the 80's, and have a couple of people already interested in the publishing rights.

WARNING! This book will have an 18 rating. As a non-smoking, non-drug taking and teetotal musician, I will leave it to your imagination as to what my vice was.............and I have pictures!

What do you think makes Modern Romance different from other bands for events?

I feel we are different from both, a sound perspective, and also with regards the interaction we have with an audience. Our sound is distinctive, in that it combines pop music with a Latin element. The trumpet sound, especially on solo spots, is quite unique in pop songs, and coupled with the singalong aspect to our hits, makes our shows fun. Audience participation is an integral part of a Modern Romance performance.

What are the top 3 most popular songs you're asked to play at events?
