Alastair Cook lunch at Boisdale Canary Wharf

Alastair Cook lunch at Boisdale Canary Wharf

On Thursday 15th May a select group of corporate VIP guests attended an inspirational and intimate lunch with England Cricket Captain, Alistair Cook.

As part of Stephen McManus’ sporting luncheon series, the Alastair Cook luncheon at Boisdale Canary Wharf was a world-class affair. Not only was the accessibility of England’s finest ever opening batsman a truly unique touch (he was quite literally one of the guests at the table, talking openly and freely as if he worked at HSBC) but a variety of added dimensions, which have become a trademark of McManus’ events, made this experience totally unforgettable. Expertly and humerously hosted and compered by bowling great, Gladston Small, the event ensured that nobody left empty-handed. Of course, there were the usual Charity auction items (all of which were one-off and fabulous) but there was also a thoughtful free gift too – a small replica Lord’s cricket bat, which you could ask Alistair and Gladston to sign at your own discretion.

The Q & A after lunch was a revelation too – literally no holds barred. Nothing was off the agenda from facing 99mph Australian bodyline balls in the ill-feted Ashes Tour last winter to the altogether more aggressive Kevin Petersen! And Alastair didn’t dodge a single question, playing everything with a straight bat, true to form. After lunch Alastair, ever the professional, had to shoot off to play a match in Essex but not before signing my (and my son’s) cricket bats, which are Woodworm (as endorsed by KP – ouch!) What a fine gentleman!
